VARICOSE VEINS & SPIDER VEINS

The vascular system is like the highway of the body – composed of blood vessels including arteries, veins and capillaries. Vascular disease is any condition of the almost 100,000 miles of blood vessels in the body; any complication along this highway can cause problems and health risk. In most cases, however, vascular conditions are highly treatable, often without surgery. Two common vein conditions include spider veins and varicose veins, but what are the differences?

Spider Veins vs. Varicose Veins

Spider veins appear towards the surface of the skin and look like a spider webs whereas varicose veins can be superficial or appear deeper and have a three-dimensional appearance. Veins can become more apparent as we age because of damaged thinning skin and aging blood vessels. Spider veins stay at the surface of the skin and usually don’t result in serious problems. Varicose veins, however, may need to be treated by a vascular specialist.

How do I know what's best for me?

Set up an appointment and we'll guide you through these steps:

  • Step 1: Evaluation

Whether you find Skin & VeinTherapies on your own or come in because of your doctor’s referral, the first step will be an initial evaluation. During this first visit you’ll provide information about your medical history and describe your current symptoms to Dr. Beckett. Dr. Beckett will also examine the affected area. It’s a simple process, and you will feel completely comfortable in our friendly office.

Based on this evaluation, he will then determine if the problem is medical or cosmetic. If your treatment is deemed medically necessary and not cosmetic, insurance documentation will be filed on your behalf for any follow-up visits and tests. Next steps will be discussed and a treatment plan will be made.

  • Step 2: Scheduled Test

Should Dr. Beckett determine that your condition is medical (from the initial screening) further testing is usually necessary. An ultrasound or Duplex Scan will be recommended. The ultrasound test is completely non-invasive and painless. It simply helps us to visualize a vein to determine the exact anatomy, direction of blood flow within the vein and to assess for abnormal valves.

With this improved ultrasound technology, we are better able to diagnose the underlying problems and prescribe a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs. This is important to achieve the long term cosmetic and therapeutic results.

Skin & VeinTherapies provides on-site testing at our accredited Vascular Lab. The Registered Vascular Technologists have been specifically trained by our vascular surgeon. Immediately following the completion of the test, Dr. Beckett will analyze the results and gives you a diagnosis. At this point, your treatment options will be discussed in detail. You’ll be provided with information about treatments to help you make a decision about the next steps.

  • Step 3: Treatment

For each patient, treatment may vary, depending on symptoms, diagnosis, and requirements for treatment. The staff at Skin & VeinTherapies will make sure all of your questions are answered and that you’re entirely comfortable and informed during whatever treatment is prescribed for you.
